Glaucoma

Glaucoma

Glaucoma, often referred to as the Silent Thief of Sight, is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness globally. It typically develops slowly over many years, initially affecting the edges of your peripheral vision—one reason why many people remain unaware they have it. The good news is that it can be detected during routine eye tests.

What Is Glaucoma?

The back of our eye continuously produces a clear fluid called ‘aqueous humor,’ which fills the front part of the eye and exits through channels in the cornea and iris. When these channels are blocked or partially obstructed, intraocular pressure (IOP) increases, damaging the optic nerve and leading to vision loss.

Types Of Glaucoma

Open-Angle (Chronic) Glaucoma

Open-Angle (Chronic) Glaucoma

The most common type, characterised by slow, painless vision loss.

Angle-Closure (Acute) Glaucoma

Angle-Closure (Acute) Glaucoma

A rare type that can occur slowly (chronic) or rapidly (acute), causing sudden, painful pressure buildup in the eye and requiring immediate medical attention.

Congenital Glaucoma

Congenital Glaucoma

Present at birth or shortly after due to abnormal eye development.

Results from an eye injury, UVEITIS (inflammation), or other eye conditions.

Symptoms Of Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma often has no symptoms except gradual vision loss.
However, acute-angle closure glaucoma is a medical emergency presenting symptoms such as:

What Causes Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye condition caused by damage to the optic nerve. This damage, often linked to increased eye pressure, results in gradual vision loss and the development of blind spots. The exact reasons for this nerve damage are not fully understood by medical professionals.
The pressure in the eye rises due to a buildup of fluid called aqueous humor. Normally, this fluid drains through a tissue called the trabecular meshwork, located where the iris and cornea meet. The cornea, essential for vision, allows light to enter the eye. When either too much fluid is produced or the drainage system malfunctions, eye pressure increases.

Risk Factors For Glaucoma

Vision Loss Progression Due To Glaucoma

Loss of peripheral vision occurs with glaucoma, causing a ‘tunnel vision’ effect on sight.

NOTE: This is for demonstration purposes only and not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult with a doctor about your vision problem and treatment for the same.

Diagnosing Glaucoma

Tonometry Test

Tonometry Test

Measures intraocular pressure (IOP) to assess glaucoma risk, identifying if fluid drains too slowly from the eye.

Tonometry Test

Gonioscopy

Gonioscopy

An eye test to check for glaucoma signs by examining the drainage angle of the eye with a special lens and slit lamp.

Automated Perimetry/Visual Field Test

Tests visual fields.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Analyses the retinal nerve fibre layer.

Pachymetry

Pachymetry

Measures corneal thickness using a pachymeter probe placed gently on the eye’s surface.

Glaucoma Treatment Options At
The SRF Eye Hospital

Early detection and treatment for glaucoma are crucial in preventing vision loss. At the SRF Eye Hospital, Delhi’s best eye hospital, we emphasise the importance of regular eye check-ups every six months to ensure healthy eyesight.

Medications

Eye drops or oral medications to reduce IOP.

YAG Laser Iridotomy

Laser is used to create a small hole in the iris, allowing fluid to exit the eye.

Trabeculectomy

A type of glaucoma surgery to create a new drainage pathway for eye fluid.

Combination Therapy

Utilises multiple treatment approaches for optimal results.
