Uveitis

UVEITIS

Uveitis is the inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye, which can impact one or both eyes. This condition can affect specific areas or multiple areas of the eye. Due to the limited space within the eye for swelling, even minor changes in eye shape can significantly impact sight. In severe cases, uveitis can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness.

Symptoms Of UVEITIS

Causes Of UVEITIS

Infections

Caused by viruses (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella-zoster), bacteria (e.g., syphilis, tuberculosis), fungi (e.g., Candida), and parasites (e.g., toxoplasmosis).

Systemic Conditions

Autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, sarcoidosis, Behçet’s disease, and lupus. Specific DNA mutations, like HLA-B27, are also associated with uveitis.

Injuries

Trauma to the eye or recent eye surgery can induce inflammation, leading to uveitis.

Medications

Certain drugs, including cidofovir, rifabutin, and bisphosphonates, may increase the risk of developing uveitis.

Complications Of UVEITIS

The main complications of UVEITIS are vision loss and blindness, but it can also lead to additional complications, such as:

Management & Treatment

While there is no cure for uveitis, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and addressing the underlying cause.

Pain Control

Medications to alleviate pain and reduce eye muscle spasms.

Inflammation Reduction

Steroids and NSAIDs to reduce inflammation.

Condition-Specific Treatments

Antiviral medications for viral infections and other specific treatments based on the underlying cause.
